Black SEN Mamas

Together, we can

Create a society where Black SEND mothers are empowered.

Our Impact

At Black SEN Mamas, we take pride in empowering Black SEND mothers. With unwavering dedication, we support over 1000 mothers from diverse backgrounds.

The experiences of Black SEND parents shine a light on societal issues and inspire us to provide the support they need to flourish. At Black SEN Mamas, we wholeheartedly embrace the challenges of raising SEND children, tailoring our support to meet the specific requirements of Black SEND mothers. By fostering a nurturing and supportive community, we empower these incredible parents to find strength and solace on their parenting journey.

What we do

We plan and deliver impactful work, driven by our desire to foster inclusivity, break down barriers, and create a brighter future for all Black SEND mothers, their children, and their families.

Therapeutic Interventions

We provide therapeutic interventions designed to cater to the unique needs of SEND mothers. Through our sessions, these women discover a safe and nurturing environment, where they can participate in healing activities, connect with others facing similar challenges, and draw strength from shared experiences. Our aim is to empower and uplift these mothers on their journey of parenting SEND children.

SEND Law Advocacy

With the help of SEND law advocates, we provide peer to peer, SEND law advocacy and support to SEND mothers; ensuring they have access to the necessary support when navigating legal matters, related to their children’s education and rights. Our knowledgeable team is committed to advocating for their rights, as well as ensuring fair treatment.

Suitable Accomodation

We understand the importance of suitable accommodation for Black SEND mothers and their families. Therefore, we forge strong partnerships with local government agencies. Through this collaboration, we strive to secure housing options that specifically cater to their unique needs; fostering a safe, secure, and comfortable environment where their families can truly thrive.

Mental Health Services

We recognise the importance of mental health for SEND mothers. Our organisation offers information and resources on affordable mental health services, ensuring they access the necessary support. We also offer psychotherapist-led workshops and counseling programmes. Empowering SEND mothers to thrive is at the heart of our mission.

Fun Family Outings

Creating joyful experiences for the whole family is a key focus at Black SEN Mamas. Therefore, we organise family fun days that are SEND friendly, ensuring an inclusive and enjoyable environment for all. These events also allow families to bond, connect with others, and make lasting memories, in a supportive community environment.

Community Workshops

Our community training workshops are intended for anyone who wants to learn more about how to better support SEND families. These workshops are typically offered as a package lasting 2 to 3 hours. They also cover a variety of relevant topics, empowering participants with valuable training to effectively support SEND families.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create a community where both parents and SEND children can find the help they need to live healthy lives. We believe that by fostering a supportive environment and providing comprehensive resources, we can empower families to overcome challenges, promote inclusivity, and enable a brighter future for all.

How we differ from other charities

We work with over one thousand Black SEND mothers, collaboratively developing an approach informed by real-life experiences, to explore optimal support for Black SEND mothers and children.

Through the use of regular surveys, panelled talks, focus groups, and support group sessions, we take the time to seek what support the mothers truly need in order to amplify their voices, and offer culturally competent training to their immediate support network (i.e. SEND services, NHS workers, schools, local authorities, wider family, and community members) to effect essential, constructive, long-term change.

Furthermore, we also differ because we possess a unique insight into the regular challenges confronted by Black SEND mothers and caregivers. This is because the Black SEN Mamas’ specialist team exclusively consists of Black mothers who have SEND children. Therefore, we have nurtured a supportive team that is united by shared goals and objectives, as we understand the burdens that come with this intersectional (Black, female, and disabled) role of parenting.
