Supporting SEND Mothers: Embracing Neurodiversity

Here at Black SEN Mamas, we are dedicated to providing unwavering support for Black mothers raising neurodiverse children. This is because we understand the unique challenges and triumphs that these mothers face on their parenting journey.

Understanding Neurodiversity

The term “neurodiversity” refers to the recognition and celebration of variation in human neurology. Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other developmental and learning differences are among the conditions covered. We value neurodiversity at Black SEN Mamas and recognise that each child’s journey is unique and deserves to be understood, accepted, and supported.

The Importance of Terminology

While we personally refer to these mothers as “mothers of neurodiverse children,” we acknowledge that the broader community still uses the term “SEND” (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) when referring to these children. Therefore, in our communications, we still use the term “SEND mothers” to connect with those seeking support. This is because our aim is to ensure accessibility to our services, and foster an inclusive environment.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

We believe that every mother raising a neurodiverse child deserves access to the support and resources they need. Therefore, by using the term “SEND mothers,” we strive to make our services easily recognisable and accessible. We also embrace the diverse terminology used and remain committed to providing a welcoming space for all mothers, regardless of the terminology chosen.

How to Get Involved

We invite all individuals who want to improve their support for SEND families to join our community. There are several ways to get involved and become a member, including contacting us via Instagram or email. So, whether you are a parent, educator, or a concerned community member, feel free to get involved.
